Cozy Cabled Crochet Blanket

During the winter I was looking for a project that would keep me busy for a few months. This cozy cabled crochet blanket was the perfect thing!  (How was that for some alliteration?) It really is cozy!  I’ve taken a few naps with it already.

While combing Pinterest I found THIS  free pattern by Red Heart that looked, with a little tweaking, that it would be the perfect throw for the end of out bed.

The changes I made to the pattern were pretty simple. The original pattern makes a more open weave, which my husband and I agreed was open enough that it seemed to defeat the purpose of having a blanket at all.  So, for ours, where the pattern says in the rounds to “dc then skip next dc”, I did a double crochet in each stitch, and didn’t skip.  The only downside to that was I used A LOT of yarn….about 2500 meters (3 of these big skeins, equivalent to 4 regular skeins, and then one regular white skein) with a 5.5 hook.

I used blocking techniques to give my squares a more finished, professional look.  This makes the squares all a uniform size and much easier to piece together (See my tutorial for blocking HERE)

Added bonus with blocking my squares, I only needed 42 squares, where the pattern is for 48.  The blanket was made to be a little something extra to fit the foot of our queen size bed.

For the border, instead of the one on the pattern, I just did a row of single crochet to attach the white yarn and then 3 rows of double crochet.  I thought the pattern itself was so pretty that I just wanted to do something that matched the main stitch a little more.

It appears I’m not the only one who thinks this blanket is cozy.  This crochet blanket is kitty cat approved!
